What is Speech Language Pathology?

Speech Language Pathology specializes in the treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. It is designed to hone on the value of language and the mechanics of speech. Individuals are often first evaluated by a pathologist who will then set goals, which could include mastering a language, learning nonverbal signs as a means of communication, etc. Persons who are nonverbal with autism can benefit as well from the Picture Exchange Communication System where therapists can help individuals build a vocabulary and communicate through pictures. These practices can be then implemented in this individual’s home, school, and other settings.
